BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the main accused in the rape of the 18-year-old girl from Unnao in Uttar Pradesh has been sent to seven-day police custody, reports said.

Later on Sunday, her father was picked up by police and allegedly roughed up by Senger's brother Atul Singh and his aides after which he died.

Singh drawn flak from all quarters after he came out in support of BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who is facing rape charges, saying that no one could rape a mother of three children.

As he was produced before the court around 4pm, Sengar claimed he was innocent and reposed faith in the "judiciary and God".

As the public outcry raged amid growing demands by political parties and civil society for the legislator's arrest, protests were also held outside Adityanath's house.

Hours after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the case on Thursday, the agency took the lawmaker into custody early this morning for questioning.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today lssured that strict actions would be taken against the accused in the Unnao gangrape case. During this period, the CBI also collected various evidence with regards to the two cases for which it has filed three FIRs.

The government has ordered security for the rape survivor's family. Later, the rape victim's father was arrested, and on Monday, he died in hospital. After this move, the victim's father was booked by the police under the arms act on April 3 this year and put in jail on April 5.

The victim's father died in judicial custody nearly a week after he was reportedly thrashed by the MLA's brother and others.

Sengar, a four-time MLA, enjoys an huge clout, cutting across party lines, in rural areas of Unnao district, a semi-urban area about 70 km from Lucknow. The FIR was filed against him hours after the state government declared that it would hand the probe over to CBI.

In the video, he alleged that he was mercilessly beaten up, including with rifle butts, by the MLA's brother and others in the presence of police.
