While no other details are immediately available, Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon confirms deputies are assisting SCDOC in its response at the maximum security prison.

Seven inmates have been killed and 17 others wounded after fighting erupted at an all-male maximum security prison in SC, officials say.

Taillon said multiple inmate fights broke out at 7:15 p.m. Sunday.

At least seven inmates were killed and 17 injured when a prison melee broke out at a SC prison, officials said.

In February, inmate Robert Odell Brown was killed by another inmate at Lee Correctional Institution.

The SCDC says no staff members or officers were injured.

Local fire and rescue officials said that they were responding to a "mass casualty incident" Monday morning at the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, which serves as a state prison for men.

"If everybody has an uprising, you are always going to be understaffed", Logan said.

Lee is a maximum-security prison that houses 1,600 inmates, including some of the state's most violent offenders, reports the State.

These deaths at Lee are the most in any SC prison in recent years.

Lee County Coroner Larry Logan told The Associated Press that he arrived to a chaotic scene of fights everywhere at Lee Correctional Institution. There were more than 20,400 inmates held in SC facilities past year, down from a peak of 24,040 inmates held in 2010, state records show.
