Nearly a week after nobody claimed the body of an 11-year-old girl who was raped and murdered in Gujarat's Surat, the city police released two photographs of the child on social media seeking help in identifying her.
It is now being believed that the girl, probably belonging to Odiya or Bengali community, was killed and the body dumped outside Surat, said Sharma.
"The area where the body was recovered is an industrial belt and has many migrants from Odisha", Surat Police Commissioner Satish Sharma said.
Police inspector BK Jhala said, "Even after eight days, the parents of the girl are yet to be identified".
The Gujarat Police had announced an award of Rs 20,000 for providing any information about the girl. The post-mortem of the body revealed that the girl was raped and tortured for at least eight days before being strangled to death, according to The Free Press Journal.
"Going by the nature of the injuries, they seem to be caused in the period ranging from one week to one day prior to the recovery of the body, suggesting that the girl might have been held captive, tortured and possibly raped", news agency PTI quoted Dr. Govekar as saying.
