A two-time victor of the Academy Award for Best Director, the "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Amadeus" helmer also won three Golden Globes, the Cannes Film Festival's Grand Prize of the Jury (for "Taking Off"), the Golden Bear at Berlin ("The People vs. Larry Flynt"), a BAFTA award, and numerous other accolades. His wife was quoted by a Czech news agency CTK as saying, "His departure was calm and he was surrounded the whole time by his family and his closest friends".
Born Jan Tomáš Forman on February 18, 1932 in Čáslav, Czechoslovakia, Forman began his career in his native country before moving to the United States following the Prague Spring in 1968.
The Hollywood Reporter describes Forman as an "anti-authoritarian" director, noting that his 1967 film The Fireman's Ball got him into trouble with communist leaders in his then home of Czechoslovakia. But this was only the beginning for the fresh Czech who later moved to the USA to direct Academy Award-winning films "Amadeus" and "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest".
Milos Forman won his second best-director Oscar for "Amadeus" in 1985. His best known works tell someone else's story, from adaptations of Hair (a Broadway music) and Amadeus (a stage play) to biopics about Hustler founder Larry Flynt (The People vs. Larry Flynt) and comedian Andy Kaufman (Man on the Moon).
Sega Announces AGES For Nintendo Switch, Mega Drive Mini Console
So as soon as we hear any more news regarding either this partnership or those upcoming titles, we will let you guys know. Not being a Shenmue fan, my eyes are on the other game announcement: Sega Ages for Nintendo Switch.
In a 2008 interview with the Directors Guild of America, Forman recalls how he, as a newly arrived foreigner, was warned against taking on "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", as the Ken Kesey novel it was adapted from was deemed to be quintessentially American. He was orphaned after his parents were taken to concentration camps.
He is survived by his third wife Martina Zborilova and his four sons. "The Communist Party was my Nurse Ratched, telling me what I could and could not do; what I was or was not allowed to say; where I was and was not allowed to go; even who I was and was not".
Oscar-winning director Milos Forman dies at 86. It was nominated for, and won, multiple Oscars, including Best Picture.
The director's first marriage, to actress Jana Brejchova ended in divorce.
