The brutal rape and murder of 8-year-old girl in Kathua district (Jammu and Kashmir) has polarised the whole nation on communal line.

The body of the girl, from the Bakherwal community, was recovered from Rassana forest on January 17, a week after she went missing while grazing horses in the forest area.

Investigators say that the girl was held captive inside a "Devisthan" or a temple, gang-raped by six men, kept without food and administered sedatives.

The charge sheeted in the case include, Sanji Ram, his nephew, Sanji Ram's son Vishal Jangotra, a friend of the nephew, a police sub-inspector, a head constable and two special police officers.

Zahoor Wani, senior campaigner, Amnesty International India said that "it is disgraceful that some lawyers and members of the BJP are trying to introduce religious prejudice into the investigation of this horrific crime, and block its investigation. Proper procedures are being followed, investigations are on fast track and justice will be delivered", the Chief Minister said.

It is important to understand how the case led to communal polarisation or is being used deliberately and nefariously to widen the existing wedge between the Bakarwal Muslim community, to which the victim belonged, and the Hindus in Kathua, some of whom carried out the crime.
