Mr Trump used an address on Friday night to say the three allies had launched military strikes to punish Syrian president Bashar Assad for the alleged chemical weapons use and to prevent him from doing it again.

He reaffirmed Russia's view that a purported chemical attack in the Syrian town of Douma that prompted the strike was a fake.

PARIS, April 14 (Reuters) - The French military targeted Syria's main chemicals research centre and two chemical production facilities overnight, officials said, adding that the air strikes were over but the military was ready to act upon request.

A US -led airstrike campaign against Syria was in response to a suspected chemical attack against civilians last weekend. Syrians crowded onto the streets in noisy demonstrations of defiance afterward and their ally Russian Federation denounced the attack.

People in Damascus were awakened by the sounds of loud explosions and saw red dots flying into the sky, in what later turned out to be the air defenses responding to the missile attack.

Trump said Assad's recent attack was a fallout of Russia's "failure" to keep the promise of eliminating Syria's chemical weapons.

"Insulting the President of Russia is unacceptable and inadmissible", added the envoy, after President Donald Trump directly called out his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin over his support for the Assad regime.

"We are prepared to sustain this response until the Syrian regime stops its use of prohibited chemical agents", he said.

The Kremlin strongly denounced the missile strikes and said it was calling an emergency session of the UN Security Council.

Syria's air defences "were made in the USSR more than 30 years ago", the ministry said. "The U.S. - the possessor of the biggest arsenal of chemical weapons - has no moral right to blame other countries".

"If it's the Russians, if it's Syria, if it's Iran, if it's all of them together, we'll figure it out, and we'll know the answers quite soon", Trump said on Monday.

"Russia's Foreign Ministry described the strikes as an "outrageous violation" of global law".

Under the deal, Syria also gave a commitment to reveal the location of its entire chemical weapons stockpile, and allow United Nations weapons inspectors into the country to verify their destruction.

Iran also issued strong statements early Saturday condemning the strikes.

Jean-Yves Le Drian, France's foreign minister, called the US-led response "targeted and proportionate". "So, I ordered the French armed forces to intervene tonight, as part of an worldwide operation in coalition with the United States of America and the United Kingdom and directed against the clandestine chemical arsenal of the Syrian regime".

"Syria continues to engage in and provide a base for murderous actions, including those of Iran, that put its territory, its forces and its leadership at risk", an Israeli official told NBC News.
