Head of Nobel literature prize panel quits over sex abuse scandal

Head of Nobel-awarding Swedish Academy steps down amid turmoil over sex assault suspect

Sara Danius, who has since 2015 served as the first female permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy-essentially making her the public face of the body that doles out the Nobel Prize in Literature-is out, and Jean-Claude Arnault is the reason why.

However, Olsson confirmed on Thursday that Frostenson, a member since 1992, was also resigning, "hoping that the Swedish Academy would survive as an institution".

Academy members are appointed for life and resignations are extremely rare.

Danius said the row over the scandal had "already affected the Nobel Prize quite severely", referring to how defections from the Academy could impact the image of the Nobel Prizes and Sweden's reputation.

Frostenson is Arnault's wife, prompting some in Sweden to note that it is sexist to punish a wife for her husband's alleged abuses. While announcing her resignation, Danius said she had lost the confidence of the academy, but did not comment on whether the academy voted to remove her, according to The Guardian. Arnault has denied the allegations.

"It was the wish of the Academy that I should leave my role as Permanent Secretary", Sara Danius told reporters.

State prosecutors are continuing to investigate incidents related to the allegations, Reuters reports. It seems Engdahl got his supporters - chiefly men - go against Danius and all those who supported her have now left the academy.

Several inmates dead after incident at SC prison
At least seven inmates were killed and 17 injured when a prison melee broke out at a SC prison, officials said. In February, inmate Robert Odell Brown was killed by another inmate at Lee Correctional Institution.

With Thursday's announcement, seven of the academy's 18 members have stepped down, casting doubts as to whether the organization can function properly.

Neither Frostenson nor the academy would elaborate.

On Wednesday, King Carl XVI Gustaf, a patron of the academy, said the difficulties surrounding the probe "are very unfortunate and risk seriously harming the academy's important work".

To her defense, the Minister of Education Anna Ekström said Engdahl is using the language of the playground.

Since a wave of allegations of sexual harassment and assault against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein started last fall, multiple men in entertainment, media, politics and beyond have faced allegations ranging from inappropriate sexual behavior to rape.

The Academy has also come under fire for the way it handled the allegations of sexual misconduct.
