Voice navigation will be available in six additional languages - Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. Google on Tuesday launched "Plus Codes", an open source solution that assigns unique codes to different locations.
This system is based on dividing the geographical surface of the Earth into tiny "tiled areas", attributing a unique code to each of them. Anyone can generate, share or even search for any particular location using this format with the help of Google Maps.
With the "Smart Address Search" feature, Google Maps will try to use all the pieces of information in the address and provide options of landmarks and points of interest that the user can best identify with. The main problem that the company faces in India is with residential addresses, which do not follow a fixed format and may vary from region to region. Places that are close together share similar plus codes, while the system is identificable by the "+" symbol in every address.
The company also added that Google Maps have been updated with Smart Address search feature, wherein it won't give up, even if it is not possible to pinpoint the exact address.
Google created "Plus Codes" for addresses that are not easily located through conventional descriptors like street names or house numbers.
