Counting of votes for Gorakhpur, Phulpur Lok Sabha by-elections tomorrow

Phulpur bypoll results 2018: Samajwadi Party's Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel leading by 9924 votes with 87,272 votes, BJP's Kaushlendra Singh Patel second with 77,348 votes after eight round of counting. The SP also stitched an alliance with the Peace Party and NISHAD party.

It was also alleged that the District Magistrate Rajeev Rautela walked into the counting centre and prevented the media from giving live updates. Gorakhpur is the sitting seat of UP Chief Minister Adityanath. In the initial rounds of counting, BJP is leading in both seats. Samajwadi Party's Praveen Kumar Nishad has received 44,979 votes. There are a total of around 29 rounds in the constituency.

According to the EC, there are 19.61 lakh voters in the Phulpur parliamentary constituency and 19.49 lakh in the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is facing a serious challenge on his home turf Gorakhpur. BJP had got about 16,000 votes and SP has about 14,000 votes. Congress stands at an abysmal 2,386 votes. In Gorakhpur, Praveen Nishad of SP has widened the lead by 9,000 votes over BJP at the end of sixth round of counting. SP and Congress shouting slogans against BJP.

Demographics in this constituency favors the opposition combine due to the presence of almost 2.5 lakh voters belonging to the Muslim community. The independent jailed candidate, Ateeq Ahmad, has garnered 15,855 votes till now. The BJP is leading in the Bhabua assembly seat, while the RJD is leading in Jahanabad, both parties holding.

The UP government as well as the state BJP has prepared a long celebrations and programmes for the anniversary starting from March 18 next but the results which is slated to go against the party has dampen the spirit of the party rank and file. A constituency won by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on five successive occasions, the saffron party not only has to win Gorakhpur but also retain, if not increase, Adityanath's 2014 victory margin of nearly 3.13 lakh votes.

The elections are keenly watched as the RJD is fighting alone, while its former partner JDU has shifted its alliance to the BJP's National Democratic Alliance.

Initially the postal ballots were being counted after which the electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be opened for counting.
