As of today though, the UFC officially confirmed that Amanda Nunes will put her women's bantamweight title on the line against Raquel Pennington. She also scored a first round TKO over Ronda Rousey in December of 2016 in her first title defence. Instead she will defend her strap in front of a home crowd against Raquel Pennington at UFC 224.
Meanwhile, Pennington gets the nod after racking up a four-fight winning streak in the division that's seen her defeat Jessica Andrade, Bethe Correia, Elizabeth Phillips and most recently Miesha Tate.
In her most recent bout, she successfully retained her title against Valentina Shevchenko by split decision in September at UFC 215.
Nunes comes into this fight on a six fight winning streak.
Beyonce and Jay-Z announce new tour
The tour kicks off June 6 in the United Kingdom with their first stop in the states on July 25 in Cleveland, Ohio. On June 9, the power couple will take to the stage in Hampden on their newly announced OTR II stadium tour.
The UFC had been looking at setting up a champion versus champion match between Nunes and women's featherweight titleholder Cris "Cyborg" Justino following Cyborg's recent short-notice technical knockout win over Yana Kunitskaya at UFC 222.
However, it was too quick a turnaround for Cyborg.
If Nunes can beat Pennington and defend her belt for a third straight time it will in all likelihood set up a superfight with her compatriot, Cyborg. White had said after Cyborg's win at UFC 222 that he was considering that fight and that it "needs to happen". "I'm not calling [Nunes] out. Nunes wants the fight, she wants the fight, I want the fight, I'm sure the fans want to see it, too, so we'll get that one going". Going down on May 12th, the UFC 224 card will also feature Lyoto Machida fighting Vitor Belfort, along with Jacare Souza's clash with Kelvin Gastelum.
