Notre Dame Women's Basketball: Irish Get 1-Seed in NCAA Tourney

Track the NCAA women's basketball tournament with our printable bracket as all the action unfolds for the next three weeks.

Joining the Huskies as top seeds are Notre Dame, Louisville and Mississippi State.

The Huskies enter as the lone unbeaten team and will be vying for their 12th national championship. UConn will have tough competition to fight through, as Baylor, Louisville, and Mississippi State - the team that knocked them off in the Final Four past year - all look strong.

The top seeds are no strangers to each other or the Final Four. Last season, UConn was the overwhelming favorite but lost to Mississippi State in the Final Four. This might be one of coach Muffet McGraws finest accomplishments as Notre Dame lost four pivotal players to injury, but only three games on the season.

One interesting part of the bracket is that UConn and last year's title victor, South Carolina, landed in the same regional and could face each other in a regional final in Albany, N.Y.

In the first and second rounds of the women's tournament, games are played on the home courts of the top 16 seeds.

Albany is slated to host regional semifinals and finals the weekend of March 24-26, and if the seeds hold, UConn would meet SC for a spot in the Final Four.

This year's Final Four is in Columbus, Ohio, and the semifinals are March 30. CT is the first overall seed in the NCAA women's basketball tournament that begins on Saturday.

This takes New Zealand to two medals overall, following Corey Peters' bronze on Saturday in the Men's Downhill Sitting event. Hosts South Korea entertained the crowd in ice sledge hockey group match with a 4-1 victory over Japan.

There was an outside chance the Notre Dame was not going to get a 1-seed.

Notre Dame (29-3) gets the top seed in Spokane, but would have to play what amounts to a road game in the regional final if No. 2 seeded OR makes it that far. Two of those losses came to the Cardinals.

The Irish will face CSU-Northridge out of the Big West Conference on Friday at 5 pm EST. If Notre Dame advances, the Irish would head out west to potentially face No. 2 seed OR if the seeds hold.

OR coach Kelly Graves is very familiar with Spokane, having coached Gonzaga from 2000-1014, leading the Zags to a regional final in 2012. Ohio State and Texas A&M are the three and four seeds in that region.

Louisville won the ACC for the first time this season and earned its first No. 1 seed. The SEC has seven teams in the tournament, and the Pac-12 has six. Purdue, Rutgers, Southern Cal and West Virginia were the others on the list the NCAA released Sunday of the final eight under consideration.

Oklahoma got in with a 16-14 record - the fewest wins for an at-large team since 2005.

The first round of the women's tournament begins on Saturday. "We went through those resumes and their body of work".

There were five teams trying to get into the bracket's top spots and in the end Baylor lost out.
