The agency alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds of about Rs 305 crore in 2007 when his father was Union finance minister. Karti's plea was that since his father dealt with various stringent penal laws like TADA, MCOCA, UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) and NDPS (Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Acts and many of these prisoners are facing prosecution under the same laws, he may face a threat from them. "He can not be exposed to any of these criminals", Krishan said. On March 9, a Delhi court had sent him to CBI custody for three days. Also, the Court directed the police to ensure that Karti gets adequate security inside the jail.
"However, only keeping in view the fact of social status of accused and his father, he can not be treated different from other accused persons and can not be allowed to be kept in separate prison".
Extending Karti Chidambaram's custody, the court told the CBI to confront him with the Chartered Accountant at Tihar Jail. A separate cell has also been asked for, if Karti is taken into the custody again. The CBI said Karti remained "evasive" and "non-cooperative" during interrogation and sought 15 days judicial custody.
Reacting to the probe agency's submission, defence counsel said that there is serious apprehension of threat to Karti Chidambaram's life as CBI is opposing his plea seeking security arrangements in Tihar Jail.

Attahullah Khogyani, spokesman for the provincial governor, said two other people in the vehicle were wounded in the attack, which was in the Bati Kot district.
The judge, however, did not find reason to grant his plea for a separate cell, saying Karti can not be treated differently from the other accused just because of his and his father's social status. I'm shocked that CBI can oppose my plea for security. The court is likely to hear the CBI matter on March 19. He has been in CBI custody for questioning since his arrest from Chennai Airport on February 28.
Meanwhile, Karti's CA, S Bhaskararaman, has moved the court for anticipatory bail in the same case.
The former finance minister's son is being investigated by the CBI for laundering money he received as payoffs to facilitate investment approval in INX Media when his father was the country's finance minister. Reports state that the fresh evidence in the case, which triggered Karti'sarrest, was based on the statement of Indrani Mukerjea, former director of INX Media (P) Ltd, who recorded it under section 164 of CrPC before a magistrate on February 17.
