The crux of the July 2015 pact between Iran and six major powers - Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States - was that Iran would restrict its nuclear program in return for relief from sanctions that have crippled its economy.
Elsewhere in his statement, Mr. Trump echoed the official United States policy: while maintaining Washington's stance on lifting parts of sanctions against Tehran, the U.S. keeps cautious in its policies dealing with Iran. "So we were not really thinking the same", Trump said before departing for California. "Trump said he demands "significant changes" in the Iran deal itself and not simply the addition of a supplemental agreement between the US and the European countries, according to the officials".
It is unclear how Mike Pompeo becoming US secretary of state may affect the Iran nuclear deal. "Two months to go and President Trump will snap back the most powerful economic sanctions against Iran unless there's a real not a fictional fix to the Iran nuclear deal".
Additionally, Trump threatened to pull-out of the Iran deal - a threat he has repeatedly made throughout his tenure as president and a candidate - if the steps he is proposing are not taken.
Trump sees three defects in the deal: its failure to address Iran's ballistic missile program; the terms under which worldwide inspectors can visit suspect Iranian nuclear sites; and "sunset" clauses under which limits on the Iranian nuclear program start to expire after 10 years.
Djokovic, Zverev Upset At Indian Wells
Japan's world No. 109 Taro Daniel pulled off a major upset Sunday at the BNP Paribas Open by beating Serbia's Novak Djokovic in the second round.
Trump's January ultimatum set May 12 as the next key deadline, when he will have to decide whether to re-impose a slew of USA sanctions that were lifted as part of the nuclear deal. It lifts sanctions placed on Iran in exchange for Iran abandoning its nuclear weapon ambitions.
The move is the latest in a series of measures by Washington aimed at dealing with one of the greatest diplomatic hurdles before Donald Trump's administration, to contain the regime in Iran while keeping up to America's worldwide commitments within the JCPOA.
So far, European powers have expressed a willingness to discuss all of Trump's concerns but adamantly believe, nonetheless, that the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, should remain in its current form.
"The North Koreans will wonder about whether one can have credible negotiations with the United States", said a former senior US official. That stance was echoed Tuesday by the USA general who heads the US military command responsible for the Middle East and Central Asia.
