BJP set to increase its Rajya Sabha tally from Maharashtra, also in Council

FM Arun Jaitley filed nomination papers for Rajya Sabha elections in Lucknow.

Whereas the BJP has re-nominated Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot from the seat, Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan was fielded from Madhya Pradesh for the first time.

The 10 Congress candidates include senior journalist Kumar Ketkar from Maharashtra, and former Union minister Naranbhai Ratwa and the party's familiar television face Amee Yajnik from Gujarat.

The biennial polls for the 10 Rajya Sabha seats from UP are due on 23 March. The JD (U) has in Bihar has nominated Mahendra Prasad Singh and Bashistha Narain Singh.

There was speculation that the BJP may ask some of its leaders to withdraw from the contest. The last date to withdraw is March 15.

The infighting in the Gujarat unit of the Congress came to fore with party leader P K Valera entering the fray as an independent. Mistry's meeting with the Congress candidate selection committee has decided only to field winnable candidates.

The term of four members of the Upper House - Rajiv Chandrashekar (Independent), Rahman Khan (Congress), Basavaraj Patil Sedam and R Ramakrishna (Both BJP) - would get ended on April 2, 2018. He was upset that the SP didn't re-nominate him to the Rajya Sabha. A candidate can score a straight win with 38 votes. Later, BJP's Kiritsinh Rana, a former MLA, entered the race as the third candidate. Hence, Congress president Ashok Chavan is trying for unopposed elections.

Patel's victory had proved to be a morale booster for the Congress in the assembly elections in 2017 and the party put up a good show, ensuring that the BJP's tally did not touch three digits.

But the BJP has now forced a vote with its last-minute nomination of the state women's commission chairperson, Vijaya Rahatkar, as its fourth candidate. For now, the Congress holds two of these seats, NCP also holds two seats while the ruling BJP and Shiv Sena share the remaining two.

Ajay Pratap Singh and Kailash Soni will contest from Madhya Pradesh. Four posts are likely to go the NDA while the Congress and the RJS are likely to get one seat each.

BJP candidate and UP general secretary Salil Bishnoi, when contacted said, "As per the orders of my party leadership, I have filed my nomination papers".

The main Opposition RJD fielded Delhi University professor Manoj Jha, who is also the national spokesperson of the RJD.

A former minister of state for railways at the Centre, Rathwa had lost Lok Sabha election in 2014.
