Pence claimed there was no daylight between the USA and South Korea on the goal of North Korean denuclearization, without acknowledging that they disagree on the path toward that goal.

At the meeting Saturday, Moon was joined by his national security director, intelligence chief, chief of staff and the unification minister, according to the Associated Press.

Though it has no real medal contenders and sent only 22 athletes, North Korea has turned out to be a major political player in Pyeongchang.

It's still unclear whether Saturday's event could be used to set up bigger meetings between the Koreas.

There was a palpable excitement in this isolated, rugged mountain town, as one of the poorest, coldest and most disgruntled parts of an otherwise prosperous South Korea kicked off two weeks of winter sports, Olympic spectacle and, just maybe, a bit of inter-Korean reconciliation. The Koreas could potentially talk about a South Korean special envoy meeting Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang or even a summit between Moon and Kim.

During his swearing-in ceremony previous year, Moon said he would be willing to travel to Pyongyang "under the right conditions", and that "for peace on the Korean Peninsula, I will do everything that I can do".

Not at all have been cheered by the talks.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force Two as he returned from watching the opening of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games in South Korea, Pence said he was encouraged by his own meeting with the South Korean president.

Already there have been concerns that North Korea's overture of the sports diplomacy is an indirect attempt by the regime to wedge a rift between the USA and South Korea. Athletes from North and South Korea entered together, wearing matching outfits and waving flags.

As First Vice-Director of the Central Committee of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party, Kim has been an increasingly prominent figure in North Korea's leadership and is considered one of the few people who has earned her brother's absolute trust.

Bloomberg reported that Pence made a five-minute appearance at a Friday night reception held by Moon, and didn't speak to North Korea's ceremonial head of state at the Winter Games, Kim Yong Nam, who was supposed to be seated at the same table as Pence. The North Koreans have invited Moon to visit Pyongyang in what would be the third inter-Korean summit talks since their 1945 division. They were stopped and most were killed near the palace, which was newly rebuilt in 1991.

The nearly 150 athletes from both countries went around the stadium behind a unifying flag with the map of the peninsula in blue on a white background.

Members of the delegations exchanged greetings during Friday's openg cerermony.

Moon did not immediately accept the invitation.

After meeting with South Korea's leader on Saturday, Pence said there is "no daylight" between the nations' views on Pyongyang. Asian media outlets quickly circulated photos of sprawling messages that Kim Yo Jong and Kim Yong Nam left in the Blue House's guest book. Analysts say that the missiles, which were successfully flight tested three times previous year, could potentially reach deep into the USA mainland when perfected.

After a chaotic year of nuclear war threats and nuclear and missile tests from the North, it was an evening of striking visual moments. The Trump administration is still wary of any kind of engagement with the North.

Mr. Sung said that the organizers sold 99 percent of 35,000 tickets to the opening ceremony, though viewers noticed many empty seats. It was built in the 1960s as a luxury facility for USA troops stationed in the South.

The unified hockey team representing North Korea and South Korea didn't fare so well in their first outing, losing 8-0 to Switzerland. Back at the athlete's village, they bunk with their respective countries.
