Israel said Peterson chose to resign as he had met the necessary requirements for retirement.

Peterson, who is not a member of BSO's union, could not be reached for comment Thursday. He is a member of the National Rifle Association, who had given him an A+ rating for his pro-gun stances, and noted in in 2014 that he had signed "more pro-gun bills into law - in one term - than any other Governor in Florida history".

He has also called for raising the legal age for buying rifles nationally to 21, and for beefing up background checks on prospective gun buyers.

In the course of a week, Stoneman Douglas students went from regular teens to massacre survivors to activists rallying to ban assault weapons.

As of now, neither school officials nor the district have issued any official statements in regards to the threat.

While the rewound footage might not have increased the number of casualties, it did hamper efforts to locate the gunman.
