Marco Rubio (R-FL) for his appearance at the CNN town hall this week. The results were both emotional and cathartic to viewers, who relished watching Rubio squirm as students pummeled him with questions and refused to let him get away with spin.
On The Late Show, Stephen Colbert called Rubio "the real star of the evening", pointing out a clip in which Rubio, attempting to explain why fixing loopholes in the laws of who can purchase assault rifles were hard, said, "once you start looking at how easy it is to get get around it, you would literally have to ban every semi-automatic that's sold in America".
Noah acknowledged that Rubio "tried his best" to explain his positions, but had some fun at the senator's expense for being "totally out of sync" with all the attendees in that arena, specifically when Rubio suggested that what they wanted would lead to the ban of all guns, which caused the crowd to roar with applause. Colbert, however, disagrees that Rubio should receive a gold star for attendance. He works for those people. But I showed up even though I knew you'd be mad. "Do you want to get high?'"
At one point Rubio was asked whether he would support stringent background checks on gun purchases. This surprised the senator, who responded, "Okay". In a speech on the Senate floor last week, Rubio said gun-control laws "would not have prevented, not just yesterday's tragedy, but any of those in recent history".

That assessment appears at odds with his actions on February 14, as presented Thursday by Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel. Sheriff Scott Israel said at a news conference he didn't know about the security system delays but would look into it.
Trevor Noah was similarly amused by the students' debate with Rubio on Thursday's Daily Show.
Talking them through the loopholes, Rubio warned, "once you start looking... you would literally have to ban every semi-automatic rifle that's sold in America". "Marco Rubio said the solution like it was the problem".
"Maybe bullying isn't that bad after all", Noah quipped.
