Pence raises prospect of U.S. talks with North Korea

Koreas Share Handshake at Olympic Games Opening

With extraordinary political optics, Winter Olympics begin

President Thomas Bach will visit North Korea after the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics as part of an agreement between the IOC and North and South Korea, a source within the Olympic movement told Reuters on Monday. But while many nations wore long trousers and thick jackets, the delegation from Bermuda wore shorts, lead by athlete Tucker Murphy who is participating in cross-country skiing at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Cybersecurity researchers said in January they had found early indications that Russia-based hackers may be planning attacks against anti-doping and Olympic organisations in retaliation for Russia's exclusion from the Pyeongchang Games.

Order wasn't fully restored to the system for 12 hours, at about 8 a.m. Saturday, the Guardian reported.

Mattis said it's unclear "if using the Olympics in a way to reduce tension - if that's going to have any traction once the Olympics are over".

The official said Pence and Moon did not discuss the North Koreans' invitation to Moon for a summit in Pyongyang, which would set the stage for the first meeting of Korean leaders in 10 years.

Vice President Mike Pence's efforts to keep North Korea from stealing the show at the Winter Olympics proved short-lived, drowned out by images of the two Koreas marching and competing as one.

At a Friday VIP reception for delegation leaders, Pence arrived late and stayed for just five minutes - and did not interact with the delegation from the North.

After South Korea visit, Pence insists 'no daylight' on North
Security Council resolutions as it pursues its goal of developing a nuclear-armed missile capable of reaching the United States. Last year, North Korea conducted dozens of missile launches and its sixth and largest nuclear test in defiance of U.N.

A handful of sports had previously begun qualifying rounds or actual competition, but the Opening Ceremony serves as an occasion for athletes to gather and celebrate their similarities, rather than their differences and rivalries.

But Moon has also said that he would be willing to meet Kim only if he received assurances from the North that it would help resolve the crisis over the North's nuclear weapons program.

Moon also urged North Korea to talk to the United States, his office said.

Deepening the odd-man-out optics for Pence, Moon and Kim, smiling broadly, exchanged a handshake and cheered the team enthusiastically. Wearing a black coat and with her hair pulled back, she presents a marked contrast to the ceremonial head of North Korea's government - the often expressionless Kim Yong Nam, 90.

The Olympics-inspired detente mood flared after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un abruptly expressed his willingness to send an Olympic delegation.

Later in the ceremony, when the two Korean teams marched into the stadium together under a flag showing a unified Korean Peninsula, Pence, his wife Karen Pence and conservative Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe remained seated, even as everyone else in the box, including Olympic officials, rose to applaud.
