'Senseless' Smalling slammed by Man Utd fans after 'utterly horrendous' first half

Newcastle United claimed a well-deserved victory over the Red Devils, and Phil Jones and Chris Smalling had an afternoon to forget.

The former United star told Match of the Day 2 on the back of a 1-0 reversal at St James' Park: "They have got the best defensive record because they have the best goalkeeper in the world in David De Gea and [Nemanja] Matic out in front who protects them really well".

Chris Smalling drew the ire of Manchester United fans on Sunday after somehow not giving away a "senseless" penalty during the first half against Newcastle United.

Jones also scored an own-goal on the night.

United are a mammoth 16 points behind Manchester City who could wrap up the title when Jose Mourinho take's his side to the Etihad in April.

The article says that both Smalling and Jones' futures at Manchester United are in doubt after the Red Devils' shaky defensive performances in recent weeks.

Smalling's dive in the second half gave the hosts the free kick which led to Newcastle's goal and has led to further questions about his Old Trafford future.

"Against Dele Alli and Harry Kane, they got bullied". They are also mooted to make a move for Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane in order to find a top quality defensive partner for their most accomplished defender, who is now sidelined due to an ankle injury, Eric Bailly.

Leicester City's Harry Maguire, who could be subject of a £50m move in the summer, and Real's Raphael Varane are noted as possible targets, the publication adds. If you look at their games, the away games they have then they'll be thinking they can finish second.

Jones and Smalling didn't impress, and they were equally uncertain against Tottenham two weeks ago, when Harry Kane gave the duo a hard evening at Wembley.

With Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof available, Mourinho could shuffle his pack in defence for the upcoming FA Cup and Champions League games.
