Kim makes halfpipe final with top mark, Clark just advances

Chloe Kim's coronation is complete as rising US star wins halfpipe gold in Pyeongchang

Chloe Kim's snowboarding career launched at 6 years old when her dad signed her up for a team because it was cheaper than lessons

Her absence from the Sochi Games was noteworthy.

The 13-year-old snowboarder was too young to make Team USA.

Official rules stated that competitors for snowboard halfpipe must have turned at least 15 years old by the end of 2013.

Chloe Kim was ready for the Olympics in 2014, but by rule, they were not ready for her.

Kim meant what she tweeted.

"To be able to have seen her a couple weekends ago at the Grand Prix and just in her strength and in her element, the grace, the height, the athleticism that she has, it was just awesome", said Lora Wehsener, the education liaison at the Mammoth Mountain Community Foundation. "I feel like he's really smart when it comes to parenting, a little overprotective but respectful".

"There's obviously such a huge difference between 13 and 17".

"I was hearing a lot of rumors about him, and our relationship in general".

"I don't know how I got this far", he said.

Like most things on a snowboard, Chloe Kim and her father learned together.

Kim has been working on them throughout the season, and whether she attempts them in Pyeongchang will depend on the quality of the halfpipe. And the expectations will be high. She landed a superb first run and increased the difficulty on her second - posting a score of 95.50, which was quite a bit ahead of the next finisher, Liu Jiayu of China. A number of Olympic sponsors have made her a cornerstone of their activations, and she's been featured heavily in NBC's lead-up marketing, even starring in her own Super Bowl commercial.

Eventually, after a two-year stint living in Switzerland with her aunt and snowboarding in the Alps, Kim came back to California and joined Wisner's program at Mammoth.

Kim Jong-jin, father of USA snowboarder Chloe Kim, speaks to reporters at Phoenix Snow Park in PyeongChang, some 180 kilometers east of Seoul, after watching his daughter's performance in the women's halfpipe event at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics on February 12, 2018.

Her upward trajectory in the sport has continued, as she has used almost unparalleled amplitude and the most progressive tricks to become the best women's halfpipe rider in the world.

Just 17, she is the only X Games athlete to win three gold medals before the age of 16.

Kim, the Korean-American who has become the poster child for Pyeongchang 2018, looked superior to the rest of the field during both runs of qualifying. Teammates Arielle Gold, Maddie Mastro and Kelly Clark went second, third and fourth behind Kim at X Games. But it just didn't go how I wanted it to go.
