China Communist Party has proposed removing presidential term limits

China’s next ideological front

The announcement was not immediately reported by Xinhua's Chinese-language service or other Chinese-language news media in China, a development that was all the more puzzling because the Central Committee is not due to meet until Monday.

Political analysts said the party would likely seek to justify the proposed removal of the presidential term limit by citing Xi's vision of establishing a prosperous, modern society by 2050.

The once-in-five-years Congress of the CPC last year approved Xis ideology to be written into its Constitution - an honour that had been reserved only to modern Chinas founder Chairman Mao Zedong and his successor Deng Xiaoping.

Meaning, President Xi Jinping could stay in the office indefinitely because, for now, he has nearly completed his two terms, and will soon be asked to step down from the presidential seat.

In a short release, the state-run Xinhua News Agency said that the Central Committee had proposed to remove from the country's constitution the expression that the president and vice president "shall serve no more than two consecutive terms".

At some point, Xi could be given a party position that also allows him to be in the party as long as he wants. The training regulation does not formally impose temporary limits on Xi, but it did exist-also so far- tacit custom of high-ranking charges to be withdrawn at age of 68.

However, the role of party chief is more senior than that of president.

The son of a famed communist elder, Xi rose through the ranks to the position of Shanghai's party leader before being promoted to the all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee in 2007. The NPC would give final shape to major decisions taken at the twice- a- decade National Party Congress held in October 2017. The plenary comes only a week before annual meeting of National People's Assembly (ANP), Chinese legislature. It has come after Mr Xi, 64, had his name enshrined in the party charter.

Since his arrival in power, five years ago, Chinese president has accumulated enormous power.

Its mandate has been characterized, abroad, by an increasingly prominent presence of China on global stage: Xi has presented itself as a defender of economic globalization and fight against climate change and has offered its country as an alternative to The isolationist tendencies of United States during era of Donald Trump.
