US reaffirms support to India's NSG bid

The Ambassador said the USA was keen to see India leading like-minded nations on a regional architecture to ensure that the Indo-Pacific region is increasingly a place of peace, stability, and growing prosperity, rather than one of disorder, conflict, and predatory economic policy. "I don't think we are going to get stability and security in Afghanistan if Pakistan does not contribute positively to that", Mr. "We need to continue to enhance the sharing of information, designations of terrorists, combating of financial crimes and networks, and disruption and dismantling of terrorist camps and operations - both regionally and globally".

Allaying fears of a probable change in the visa regulations that could affect around 750,000 Indian H-1B visa holders and could even lead to them being deported, American Ambassador Kenneth Juster assured on January 11 that the United States will continue to be a country of immigrants and that will not change.

Delivering his inaugural policy address on US-India Relations at Carnegie India, Juster said US is concerned about persistent trade deficit with its trade partners, including India. "We also expect in the very near future India to join the Australia Group on chemical and biological weapons".

"We (Us and India) have a strong mutual interest in eliminating this threat to our societies".

"President Trump and other USA leaders have been clear that we will not tolerate cross-border terrorism or terrorist safe havens anywhere".

Juster's statement comes at a time when India will be once again pursuing its membership for the NSG during the meeting of the group this summer.

China has been opposing India's entry into the 48-member elite nuclear club, which controls nuclear trade, despite support from all other members. India is not a signatory to NPT.

"Pakistan is also important to the situation in Afghanistan". Through its sustained efforts, the United States believes that India may finally get a seat in the NSG. The US envoy in particular emphasised on India's role in Indo-Pacific region and opportunities in economic partnership. The US will remain committed to this region - as we are to the rules-based worldwide order - because our future is inextricably linked to it.

The US government is planning a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India in an effort to boost two-way trade that now stands at $115 billion.

Juster explained that US President Donald Trump's "America First" and PM Modi's ambitious "Make in India" programme. A number of USA companies have reported increasing difficulties conducting business in the largest market in the region - China. "But, we also want to make clear that if they are going to be engaged in certain predatory economic behaviour or activities then there is an alternative set of principles that the other countries in return are going to follow".

In fact, he went as far as to suggest that India emerge an as "alternative hub" to China for USA businesses in the region.

United States ambassador to India Kenneth Juster on Thursday called for strengthening economic ties between the world's oldest and largest democracies, which he said, would result in greater USA commitment to India and the Indo-Pacific region and help iron out any major differences that may crop up between the two.
