Head coach Ron Rivera hopes the moves will help star quarterback Cam Newton as he continues to develop.

While he has never led a No. 1 offense, Turner's teams have finished in the top five in scoring several times - 1992-1993 in Dallas, 1999 in Washington and from 2007-2011 in San Diego.

Turner comes to Carolina with a wealth of experience, having coached 32 seasons in the National Football League, including 15 seasons as a head coach and 11 as an offensive coordinator. He spent the 2014-2016 seasons as the quarterbacks coach at Minnesota, where his dad was the offensive coordinator, before joining MI this year. Newton, 28, is coming off his worst two seasons in terms of passer rating.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Monday he did not anticipate any coaching staff changes, but changed his mind after sleeping on it. He came to Minnesota in 2014 and left abruptly in 2016 seven games into the season.

Turner's system has produced the NFL's leading rusher on six different occasions: Emmitt Smith (1991-93), Ricky Williams (2002), LaDainian Tomlinson (2007) and Adrian Peterson (2015). Most recently, he worked with Teddy Bridgewater in Minnesota. He's now going to rely a lot on the play-action pass and deep ball with Cam Newton under center.
