McSally announces bid for Arizona Senate seat

Arpaio's Determination to Run Shakes Up Senate Race in Arizona

Ward's campaign has called McSally "Jeff Flake 2.0" and noted that McSally refused to endorse Trump a year ago. "She opposed Donald Trump as a candidate and has undermined him as president, which is why leading conservatives are rejecting McSally and are lining up behind a true reformer in Dr. Kelli Ward".

Ward said she would run for Flake's seat shortly after losing a 2016 challenge to Arizona Republican Sen.

"I absolutely refused to bow down to sharia law", she says.

Martha McSally (R) will announce Friday that she's running for the Senate seat vacated by retiring Sen.

But McSally's video seeks to reassure GOP primary voters that she is in the president's corner, too.

Former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, convicted of criminal contempt of court before being pardoned past year by President Donald Trump, is back for a third act, announcing Tuesday that he will run for Senate.

However, she removed Bannon's name from her list of endorsements after Trump split with Bannon over comments in a newly published book critical of the president.

The former six-term sheriff of metro Phoenix also said he and Trump have both been persecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Arpaio, who announced his campaign earlier this week, was convicted of criminal contempt for ignoring a judge's order to stop detaining immigrants because he suspected that they lacked legal status.

Yet she has tacked right in recent months and aligned herself with Trump as the 2018 campaign season neared.

Arpaio's announcement caused some people to wonder if he is serious about a Senate bid or simply seeking publicity. He flirted with running for governor no fewer than five times over the years before abandoning the idea.

Arpaio's only Republican competition so far is former state legislator Kelli Ward, and Wells said he thinks the former sheriff has a real chance of winning the primary if no one else gets in the race.

For decades, Arpaio was also known for jailing inmates in outdoor tents during Arizona's triple-digit summer heat and forcing them to wear pink underwear.

Arpaio's re-election defeat came amid a crush of criticism over $141 million in legal costs that Maricopa County taxpayers paid to defend him in lawsuits over his contentious immigration policies, deaths of inmates in his jails and a child sex abuse case botched by his agency. Trump has not endorsed a candidate in the race.

"Well, let me just say I've spoken a little salty behind closed doors as well so I'm not going to throw the first stone on using any language, and I guess there was a dispute as to what was actually said", McSally said.

But in a sign of how thoroughly Trump now dominates her party, McSally has been snuggling up to the 45th president in preparation for her Senate run. Follow Jacques Billeaud at www./jacquesbilleaud.
