Hulu Ad Revenue Surpasses $1 Billion, Subscriber Base Grows 40% YoY

Hulu directly credited the popularity of originals like The Handmaid's Tale in helping it surpass the 17 million subscriber mark in its recent recap of how the service performed in 2017, pointing out the dystopian series now rates among its top three dramas (along with Law & Order: SVU and This Is Us). Although Hulu isn't releasing specific audience data, the company did offer some insights into which of its offerings rate best with subscribers.

One of the biggest reasons why Hulu has done very well in 2017 is because it had a lot of content added to its lineup in 2017 including the entirety of Futurama, several 90's throwbacks and several selection of NBC favorites like Parenthood and 30 Rock. Hulu had 10 Emmy Awards this year as well, including the first-ever Outstanding Drama Emmy won by a streaming service. Hulu notes that its library of 75,000 episodes across 1,700 titles is "more than twice the number of episodes available on any of the other leading streaming services". Hulu has also had a history of management tumult-last October CEO Mike Hopkins left for Sony TV and was replaced by Randy Freer, the former president and COO of Fox Networks Group-and has been losing money.

Consumers aren't the only ones who love Hulu; brands love it as well.

Hulu viewers have a median age of 31 - almost 25 years younger than the average broadcast TV viewer (55) - and a median annual household income of $92,000. It's also unclear what portion of Hulu's subscribers are on the live-TV plan (which includes SVOD access) as opposed to SVOD alone.

January 2018 sees Nougat close to overtaking Marshmallow
Android KitKat (4.4) slipped to 12.8 percent this month, while Android Jelly Bean (4.1-4.3) fell to 5.6 percent usage this month. Android Lollipop (5.0 and 5.1) is still claiming a significant piece of this pie, despite having slipped to 25.1 percent usage.

The top three dramas on Hulu in 2017, based on hours watched, were Law & Order: SVU, This is Us and The Handmaid's Tale, which has been getting terrific reviews from both viewers and critics.

Hulu, for now, remains committed to winning subscribers - and has been cutting deals to bring more content to the SVOD platform.

Based on hours watched, all three of Hulu's top comedies in 2017 were animated: "Family Guy" and "Bob's Burgers" were right behind "South Park".
