Countdown on to avoid US shutdown

Congress Likely Racing Toward a Government Shutdown

Why the US government shut down and what it means

President Donald Trump and the Republican Party would shoulder the blame if the government shuts down, according to a new poll from ABC News and the Washington Post released Friday.

Since then, however, the president has engaged in a series of spats with Congress. Trump and conservatives in Congress have used the Dreamer fight to try and win tough new immigration controls, including the president's promised border wall. Ed Markey (Mass.) on whether it is "hypocrisy " for Democrats to force a government shutdown over immigration reform after Sen. It could also threaten to slow any GOP momentum, one month after passage of the party's signature tax cut law. But Democrats appear intent on securing concessions that would, among other things, protect from deportation young immigrants brought to the country illegally as children, increase domestic spending, aid Puerto Rico and bolster the government's response to the opioid epidemic.

"We had a long and detailed meeting", Schumer told reporters at the U.S. Capitol after the meeting, which lasted more than an hour. Another survey by Quinnipiac University national poll found 32% would blame Republicans, 21% Trump and 34% Democrats.

Speaking as he returned to Capitol Hill after the 90-minute meeting, the NY senator said: "We had a long and detailed meeting".

Earlier in the day budget director Mick Mulvaney blamed democrats for the stand-off described it as the "Schumer Shutdown".

The House of Representatives voted 230-197 on Thursday night for a bill to extend expiring funding through February 16.

Democrats are demanding help for "Dreamers", more than 700,000 immigrants who entered the United States illegally as children.

"The only people standing in the way of keeping the government open are Senate Democrats", Ryan said.

For his part, Trump described his discussion with Schumer as an "excellent preliminary meeting", tweeting that lawmakers are "Making progress - four week extension would be best!"

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says that Democrats will get the blame for a partial government shutdown that looks increasingly likely. "And he's not yet indicated what measure he's willing to sign", McConnell said Wednesday.

Trump has been an unreliable negotiator in the weeks leading up to the showdown.

The rapper was also on felony probation for fleeing officers and a delinquent felon in possession of a gun conviction. In one of the videos, an unidentified man can be heard alerting Kodak that his phone is part of the search warrant.

"They don't oppose anything in the bill, but they are opposing the bill, " Mulvaney said at the White House. Of course, his last-ditch proposals would do nothing for the children's health program or the nine million children that are waiting on us to renew it. His disparaging remarks about African and Haitian immigrants last week helped derail further negotiations.

He is scheduled to leave Washington late Friday afternoon for another weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla., one that would include a special fundraising dinner that would mark his one-year anniversary in office on Saturday. "I think the American people clearly would not expect us to act this way".

"I'm leaning no right now, but there are a bunch of options on the table that could get my vote", said David Schweikert of Arizona, a member of the Freedom Caucus.

January 19, 2018: Senate Democrats refuse to take up the bill passed by the House, and they have the votes to filibuster it, despite McConnell's protests.

If Democrats vote the bill down, the move would hold undeniable risks. We know that with one noncontroversial and bipartisan vote, we can keep the government up and running.

"It doesn't solve any problems because we'll have to do another CR later", Cornyn told Business Insider. The measure's fate in the Senate remained in doubt as the clock ticked ever-closer to the deadline at the end of Friday. "The Republican leadership has to get serious about finding a budget deal and quit relying on short-term patches". Democrats don't oppose most of the other measures in the stopgap bill and enthusiastically support the six-year extension of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

In a tweet, the Republican president criticised a sweetener offered by congressional leaders to Democrats to vote for the spending bill.

But the shutdown could also be problematic for 10 Democratic senators who are up for re-election this year in states won by Mr Trump.

The last time the government shut down was in 2013 over then president Barack Obama's healthcare plan.

With no agreement by midnight, the government would begin immediately locking its doors. Though the impact would initially be spotty - since most agencies would be closed until Monday - the story would be certain to dominate weekend news coverage, and each party would be gambling the public would blame the other.

"This is an irresponsible position to take as everything from pay for our military to processing social security checks will be affected".
