Coordinator watch: Bears waiting on Vic Fangio

Mark Helfrich agreed to join the Bears as Matt Nagy's offensive coordinator

Mark Helfrich agreed to join the Bears as Matt Nagy's offensive coordinator

The 59-year-old coach was being pursued by other teams, including the Green Bay Packers, for their defensive coordinator positions, but those opportunities seemed to dry up, so Fangio's return to Chicago seemed likely.

During his annual Thanksmas event, Maddon gave praise to new Chicago Bears head coach, who like Maddon is from Pennsylvania and took an interesting route to get to his dream job.

The Bears defense finished in the top ten in both yards and points allowed in 2017 while forcing 22 takeaways. Line coach Harry Hiestand and running backs coach Charles London were hired on Wednesday.

Fangio has spent the past three seasons as the Bears defensive coordinator.

The Bears recently hired coach Matt Nagy, who has said he will handle the play-calling duties.

Mark Helfrich: The former OR head coach will serve as Nagy's offensive coordinator, although Nagy is expected to call his own plays. Only if he had somehow stolen special-teams guru Dave Toub from the Chiefs could Nagy have done much better.

The war has killed more than 10,000 Yemenis, mostly civilians, and pushed the country to the brink of mass starvation . Yemen has remained dogged by war since 2014, when Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including capital Sanaa.

Nagy still has several coaching positions to fill, but Fangio's return is somewhat of a clincher.

Helfrich was also reportedly offered the offensive coordinator position at UCLA by Chip Kelly-an especially enticing proposition for southern OR football fans given Chase Cota's commitment.

Chicago's defense ranked 10th overall, seventh against the pass, ninth in scoring and 11th against the run. Jones posted on social media yesterday that he had a procedure earlier this week to fix the shoulder he injured in the Week 15 win against the Chicago Bears.

If he leaves Chicago, he could potentially be replaced by Arizona's current defensive coordinator, James Bettcher. Those same 10 players have exactly one Pro Bowl berth since he left.

For now, the waiting game with Fangio continues and if the Bears' fallback plans aren't currently available, there is no reason to hurry.
