The Supreme Court on the last Wednesday also raised concerns over homeless who are not getting benefits of the social welfare schemes. Although whether the latest initiative from UIDAI fixes Aadhaar problems or not is something that will be clear only when more details of the virtual Aadhaar ID are revealed. "I think, everybody has to accept Aadhaar is here to stay", the former UIDAI chief said. However, in the wake of the news UIDAI claimed that Aadhaar was completely secure and that leaking of demographic details didn't matter.
Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Jan.8 said the government asked the UIDAI to request the Tribune and its journalist to assist the police in the investigation. So, people do not need to share the actual 12-digit biometric ID if they are really anxious about the privacy of their data. The report says that the virtual Aadhaar ID will have 16-digits and that this will be the only information that any agency or entity doing authentication will have.
VID is a 16-digit, randomly-generated number which can be used for authentication instead of the original Aadhaar number. Users can go to the UIDAI website to generate their virtual ID which will be valid for a defined period of time, or till the user decides to change it. It is not possible to derive Aadhaar number from VID.
Instead, a random 16-digit Virtual ID number would be generated and could be used in lieu of Aadhaar with the authorised agency like banks and telecom service providers. Since the system generated Virtual ID will be mapped to an individual's Aadhaar number itself at the back end, it will do away with the need for the user to share Aadhaar number for authentication.
Chinese trade with North Korea plunged by 50% last month
Japan has also raised concerns around the meeting, with Japanese officials suggesting too many countries are invited. The attendees to the Vancouver conference are from nations involved in fighting North Korea during the Korean war.
But how the classification would be done remains a grey area, and clearly there would be overlaps, breaches in these interfaces. According to the UIDAI, agencies that start authentication will not be permitted to produce Virtual IDs on behalf of Aadhaar holders.
Users will be able to generate, retrieve and revoke their Virtual ID number from the UIDAI website, mAadhaar mobile app or Aadhaar enrolment centres. 210 government published at least 13 crore Aadhaar numbers in the past and the risk of people having these numbers already is very high.
This new security mechanism will kickstart from March 2018.
This Limited KYC service provides an "agency specific unique UID token to eliminate many agencies storing Aadhaar Number, while still uniquely identifying their customers and enabling their own paperless KYC". The hurry with which it was turned into a national ID system for over a billion Indians is now evident, with a new issue staring at UIDAI's face every day. But everything is recorded if you take public transports like flights.
