Serena Williams to return at Australia Open says tournament chief

Melbourne United to host Cairns Taipans at Australian Open

Serena, who recently got married and give birth to a baby girl, hasn't played since winning her 23rd Grand Slam at the event a year ago.

She gave birth to a girl in September and has taken to the practice courts in preparation for a return in 2018.

Tournament director Craig Tiley is optimistic that she would return for a crack at her seventh Melbourne Park crown.

Serena Williams has entered the Australian Open, the tournament announced.

"She's got her visa, she's practising and she's probably just got to find a bit more space for a bigger entourage", said Tiley as media reports suggest. Williams married Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian in New Orleans in a November ceremony.

"We'd be pretty excited about the possibility (of her coming)", he added.

The Melbourne-Cairns fixture was scheduled originally to be played at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on January 14, because of the unavailability of Hisense Arena due to the Australian Open, but it has now been moved back to United's home ground to be played on January 24.
