According to reports, Reynolds has signed on to star in Legendary's live-action Pokemon movie in the role of the titular character.

The upcoming Detective Pikachu movie will also star actors Justice Smith, recently seen in the Netflix series The Get Down, and Kathryn Newton from the HBO miniseries Big Little Lies. Goosebumps director Rob Letterman is at the helm of the production.

No firm release date has yet been announced for Detective Pikachu, but with Reynolds on-board, that should come soon enough.

For any other leading man, that synopsis would be a head-scratcher, but Reynolds is turning roles that wouldn't work for many of his peers into gold. Players usually act as trainers, who must collect the Pokemon creatures and use them to do battle. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company released a Detective Pikachu game for the 3DS past year, and Legendary announced it is adapting the property into a film in August 2016.

Despite that, "Detective Pikachu" is scheduled to start shooting in January. Newton will reportedly play a journalist while Reynolds' Pikachu will offer his help along the way.

The new film will be based on the already-successful franchise, introduced with video games in Japan in 1996. Universal Pictures will handle distribution in the USA and in foreign territories outside Japan. Let us know in the comments!
