"Guests are going to love the convenience of having payment, Cartwheel [a coupon clipping service] offers, Weekly Ad coupons and GiftCards all in one place with Wallet".
Describing the launch of Target Wallet as new may be something of a stretch since it's essentially an augmentation of the pre-existing Cartwheel digital coupons and discounts feature in its app, with payments now embedded into the coupon redemption capability. Target, however, wants more customers to shop with Wallet and is already working out a way to get them to use the feature even if they don't own a REDcard. Users can apply Cartwheel deals to their purchase and check out with a single scan of the in-app barcode.
Target's new Wallet feature has been rolling out for a few weeks now, but is now live for everyone. To use, customers have to add their REDcard debit or credit card and then - when they are done shopping and have reached the checkout - just present the barcode in the app for scanning. This means the retailers have decided not to opt-in to Apple Pay or Android Pay, and are instead trying to encourage customers to use its own apps while shopping.
According to Target, Wallet enables shoppers to checkout four times faster than "other payment types", a nice kick to the shin to traditional payment methods like chip-and-PIN cards.
