A possible Islamist extremist, who was preparing an attack on dissident civilians in the center of NY, is the man who was shot and killed in the Bronx by police special units early Tuesday morning (local time).

The officers went into a rear bedroom where the man confronted them with a knife that had a 2-foot long blade.

"The uniformed officers ordered the subject to drop the weapon and he refused to comply", Chief Monahan said.

No officers reported injuries in the shooting, officials said.

An elderly man was also in the apartment during the incident but was not injured. Monahan said police were told the apartment had firearms and drugs inside.

The suspect, who was not the person authorities were initially searching for, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The search warrant was issued in order to seize those items. Weeks later, the Police Department released portions of the footage of each of those encounters showing the final moments before the officers fired their weapons. A machete was reportedly recovered at the scene.
