A new wildfire broke out overnight in some of Los Angeles' most exclusive neighborhoods on its tony Westside near UCLA and the Getty Center, home to one of the nation's top art museums. It began at 3:43 a.m. PT Monday, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. Approximately 2,500 homes had been evacuated in that blaze and an estimated 150,000 residents had been affected. The Rye fire shut down Interstate 5, the state's major north-south artery. Fire officials said a firefighter was injured when the bulldozer he was operating overturned in an attempt to try to cut fire lines on the steep hillsides. Jerry Brown declared a State of Emergency in Santa Barbara County on December 7 due to the Thomas Fire that has already scorched at least 132,000 acres and destroyed over 439 structures.
Gov. Brown said, "This fire is very risky and spreading rapidly, but we'll continue to attack it with all we've got. It's critical residents stay ready and evacuate immediately if told to do so".
As of Friday morning, only the 210's Osborne Street offramp remained closed, the CHP said.
Some 400 firefighters and more than 50 fire engines were deployed to the scene of the fire. "The structures can get rebuilt, but the lives of the horses can't..." Southern California Edison, the area's utility, said 20,000 people still had no electricity as of 8 a.m. and that some residents should be prepared to go days without power because of ongoing fire danger and the anticipated difficulty of repairs.
Nuggets' bench helps fuel road win
On Friday night, however, the thoughts centered more around their injured star. "You know we can't feel sorry for ourselves now. The Nuggets shot 58 percent (15 for 21) in the second quarter and had a 33-8 advantage in bench points in the first half.
"At this time, the fire has grown to over 4,000 acres and still growing, as you can see, with the wind gusts now facing us here, approximately a couple of miles away from the fire", Richardson said.
All public schools in Ventura and several neighboring districts will be closed on Tuesday.
"We have this fire and the devastating fire in Ventura County have definitely tapped resources throughout the region", Richardson says.
Weather also posed a challenge for crews facing the Creek Fire in Los Angeles County. It remained unclear how many structures were destroyed, though authorities said many were reported as threatened and some were on fire.
