The death toll in the Zaveri Bazaar building collapse touched four on Saturday, with rescuers pulling the body of a 50-year-old man, who was later identified as Barkat Ali Khan, from under the rubble.

Prabhat Rahangdale, the Chief Fire Officer (CFO) of Mumbai Fire Brigade said, "The search and rescue operation has been completed early Saturday morning".

Fire brigade was immadiately rushed on the spot.

A part of staircase collapsed during the repairs of a Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) building around 2:30 pm trapping labourers.

Officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Disaster Management Cell said the bodies of Firoz Shaikh (23), Safar-ul-haq (26) and Rocky Shaikh (22) were recovered on Friday evening.

According to civic officials, Mhada's fix work was on at the fourth floor when a flooring slab from a portion of the passage fell down along with portions of the floor slabs from the first, second and third floor.

Officials also said that the operation at the crash site was over. Five labourers said they had asked the contractor to prop the building before initiating repairs. According to officials, there were a total of 41 tenants residing in the building. Fire brigade officials said rescue operations were delayed owing to congested lanes and the building's narrow entrance.

"As a preventive measure, two vehicles from the Mumbai fire brigade are stationed at the spot".

TOI has learned that the dilapidated building, Chhipi Chawl, had been served two eviction notices by the BMC, with the latest one as recently as in September.
