The performance SUV, which also won the 2017 World Car Design of the Year at the 2017 World Car Awards, scored 93 percent for adult occupant protection, 85 percent for child occupant protection and 80 percent for pedestrian protection.
Back when it was first tested in 2005 and under different test criteria, the Punto (then known as the Grande Punto) scored five stars for the protection it offered adult occupants, and three stars for child passengers.
The Punto is not now sold as a new vehicle in New Zealand.
Low impact protection and absence of modern safety-assist technology was the Punto's downfall.

The most extreme example, however, is the FIAT Punto, which has been on sale since 2005 but is still a strong seller in Italy. Superminis like the new Polo, the Fiesta and the Ibiza now come with advanced safety technology as standard, offering the best in crash avoidance and crash protection.
Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP's general secretary, said: "This is perhaps the strongest example of a manufacturer continuing to sell a product that is well past its best-before date, at the expense of the unsuspecting vehicle buyer".
"The results for Ford's C-Max cars disappoint".
The Jaguar F-Pace has added a five-star Euro NCAP rating to its 2017 World Car of the Year title.
