A new federal report on homelessness in America offers a snapshot of how San Diego County is doing compared with other cities. It does not take into account families and individuals who might experience homelessness at other times during the year.
Veteran homelessness decreased 4.25 percent since January 2016.
In better news, Utah continues to have one of the lowest rates of veteran homelessness with a 34 percent dip over the a year ago.
A federal agency says IN had an estimated 360 fewer homeless people during this year's annual count of the nation's people without homes. "While 2017 saw a small rise in overall homelessness in the state as well as veteran homelessness, levels of family homelessness dropped over 36 percent, which is great progress".

Overall, 68.2 percent of the homeless in California are unsheltered, the highest rate of any state.
- The number of families with children experiencing homelessness in 2017 ( 3,904 ), decreased by 15.2 percent ( or 700 persons ) since 2016 and decreased by 42.8 percent ( 2,923 ) since 2010.
HUD says more than 4,800 of Indiana's homeless residents were found in emergency shelters or transitional housing and almost 570 were living on the streets. For every 10,000 people in California, 34 are homeless.
"With rents rising faster than incomes, we need to bring everybody to the table to produce more affordable housing and ease the pressure that is forcing too many of our neighbors into our shelters and onto our streets", Carson suggested.
While 30 states and the District of Columbia saw decreases in their homeless numbers, 20 saw increases, including California, up 13.7 percent to 134,278. This year, HUD and local communities launched a more intense effort to more accurately account for this important, hard to count population. Since 2010, however, veteran homelessness in IL declined by 23.7 percent and by almost 46% nationally. HUD will treat 2017 as a baseline year for purposes of tracking progress toward reducing youth homelessness.
