The search-engine giant, Google has introduced a new feature to its Maps application in India. The company also showcased several upcoming features in the existing products, which will help the consumers in the country.

"Oreo devices with 512MB to 1GB of RAM will get all the optimisations that come with Android Oreo (Go edition), including a better performing OS with built-in data management features and security benefits", said Caesar Sengupta, Vice President, Next Billion Users Team at Google.

Despite the growing prevalence of smartphones, hundreds of millions of people still use feature phones, which don't run Android, but do feature internet connectivity. Google Maps director Martha Welsh made an official announcement at Google for India event.

Android Oreo (Go edition) smartphones also come with a version of the Google Play Store which will highlight low-resource oriented apps suited for the device.

The company also released a special version of the Google Assistant, for the JioPhone. A new home screen for the app on Android, which loads faster, was unveiled May. Note that the JioPhone already comes with its own in-house assistant - called HelloJio - that can be used for voice search and fire up relevant apps, including calling and texting people. Like the skills on Amazon Alexa, you will be able to use actions on Google Assistant to interact with services like the BookMyShow Goibibo, SBI and more.

Google also announced a new version of Tez, its payment app that incorporates UPI technology.

The routes are generally faster (if not shorter), as they take into account shortcuts that are more easily accessible by two-wheeler, or offer directions that are quicker to navigate than when in you're in a larger vehicle.

Talking about Tez launched in September this year, Sengupta said the app now has 12 million users. The company demoed the feature on the stage at the event and it seems pretty simple.

The tez app will also give you notifications to remind you to pay your bill.

At its launch, the bill payment facility will support over 70 billers, including national and state electricity providers, gas and water, and DTH recharge, Google said.
