Last month, the apex court refused to put stay on linking of Aadhaar with bank accounts and mobile phones. Recently, it was also reported that the mobile connections not linked to Aadhaar card will get deactivated. The new deadline will be March 31 instead of December 31, and a notification for this will be issued tomorrow, the court was told.
The Union government on Thursday informed the Supreme Court that it will extend up to March 31, 2018, the point in time fixed for mandatory linking of Aadhaar with various government schemes, including one's bank accounts. The extension would, in all likelihood, include the mandatory linking of Aadhaar with bank accounts.
Citizens are required to link their 12-digit unique identification number with government services, PAN cards, mobile numbers and bank accounts.

The Central government has previously made Aadhaar card mandatory for carrying out nearly all the legal tasks in the country.
"Supreme Court too in Lokniti Foundation case through an order passed in February 2017 has approved verification of all SIM cards with Aadhaar", UIDAI said.
