Chris Coleman has resigned as Wales manager in order to take the vacant job at Championship side Sunderland.

He was appointed in January 2012 and struggled at first in a dismal 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign, which included an embarrassing 6-1 defeat in Serbia.

Coleman is set to be officially unveiled as Sunderland manager at some point over the course of the weekend. The Black Cats are now sitting at the bottom of the Championship table.

Coleman, 47, became the most successful manager in Welsh history when he guided the national team to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 in France.

"Chris was appointed manager in January 2012 in very hard circumstances and has guided Wales to the semi-finals of EURO 2016, an incredible achievement that inspired a nation".

Coleman has agreed to lead Sunderland who were relegated to England's second tier from the Premier League this year, the reports said. Wales national team coach Kit Symons has also left his position. We and Wales as a nation will be eternally grateful for the job he has done over six years.

Coleman would be the Black Cats' fifth permanent manager since March 2015.

Wales' failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup triggered a break clause in Coleman's contract that Sunderland were able to take advantage of.

Michael O'Neill, the Northern Ireland manager, Paul Heckingbottom, who is in charge at Barnsley, and Ally McCoist were among the other candidates considered for the Sunderland post but Coleman emerged as the clear frontrunner.
