Apple has once again emerged as the no.1 in the wearable band market in a quarter said Canalys Research in its latest market report

Armed with his kitesurf and Apple Watch 3 on his wrist, one John Zilles took against the waves on a new underwater hydrofoil wing, but about a mile in, he wiped out, and couldn't get his heavy kit airborne again.

Apple saw strong interest in its updated Apple Watch Series 3 smartwatch in the third quarter, but most buyers opted for models without the most-touted new feature: cellular connectivity.

Canalys analyst Jason Low notes that cellular connectivity appears to be driving demand, which is mitigating concerns at wireless carriers that consumers aren't interested in cellular smartwatches (a concern that I shared previously). Xiaomi, which led the global wearables space briefly, has slipped down to the second place, shipping 3.6 million wearables, while Fitbit is in the third spot after shipping 3.5 million units.

Apple has retaken the top spot from Xiaomi to become the market leader for wearables on the wrist.

Grateful for his new Apple Watch 3 functionality that took him out of a potentially unsafe situation, John Zilles emailed Apple to let them know how he appreciates the gear, and apparently even got a short reaction by fellow fitness nerd Tim Cook himself, in the form of one short but sweet "wow, happy to hear you are safe" reply.

The release of the company's third generation smartwatch has helped boost the company's fortunes. In total, the overall wearable band market fell 2 percent year over year to reach 17.3 million units. The researcher estimates that approximately 800,000 Apple Watches shipped during the quarter - about a fifth - included cellular connectivity.

Though third quarter is the weakest period for the sales of wearable devices, top manufacturers gained huge in Q3 2017. With figures of the Q3 2017 coming into the picture, Apple has 23 percent of the market share.

The Mac maker uses a unique definition for wearables and includes wireless headphones like AirPods and BeatsX as well as Apple Watch.

At 9.53 a.m. EST, Apple shares were down 0.57% at $173.02.
