Eight nursing home residents have died after the building in Florida lost power due to Hurricane Irma. Police have said the deaths are under investigation.

"The loss of these individuals is a profound tragedy", said a statement by the Florida Health Care Association, which represents 81% of Florida's nursing centers.

The five women and three men ranged in age from 70 to 99.

Officers ordered an evacuation of the building and 115 patients were taken to nearby hospitals.

More than 140 residents of the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills were evacuated on Wednesday after fire and rescue crews and medical staff from a nearby hospital found numerous facility's residents suffering from dehydration, heat stress and breathing difficulties. Others were taken away on stretchers.

Hollywood Fire Rescue found several patients "in varying degree of medical distress and immediately began treatment" when they arrived at the Hollywood Hills facility on Wednesday morning, according to the city's statement.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which regulates nursing homes, gives the Hollywood center a below-average rating, two stars on its five-star scale.

Older people can be more susceptible to heat because their bodies do not adjust to temperatures as well as younger people.

CNN's reporting makes it clear the nursing home wasn't even aware that people were dead and dying in their own facility. An estimated 25 percent of homes in the Keys were destroyed, while around 90 percent had some kind of damage, according to estimates by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The number of people in shelters fell to under 13,000.

On his first trip, he met with local and state authorities in Corpus Christi and Austin, but did not view damage or meet with victims.

Larkin Community Hospital, which is adjacent to the retirement home, was also being evacuated.
