The female koala crawled into the wheel arch while the auto was parked in the hills on the outskirts of Adelaide, the state capital of South Australia.
The koala, named Kelly after one of the rescuers, is believed to have been stuck under the wheel for up to an hour.
The driver was unaware of the koala clinging to his wheel throughout the 10-mile journey through Adelaide until he stopped his vehicle after being flagged down by other motorists. The furry hitchhiker travelled 16km before the driver heard it crying out. "And it's absolutely incredible that", Jane Brister, from Fauna Rescue SA, said following the discovery of the koala.
"It wasn't until he was getting out of his auto that he realised", Ms Brister said.
"I soon realised her predicament".
"We had to get the wheel removed but the owner wasn't able to locate the jack or the key to unlock the wheel nut so we had to get assistances from the MFS".
"We weren't sure if she was pinned at first", she said.

The Rams went three-and-out on their first possession but used a 65-yard Ryan Stonehouse punt to pin Alabama at its 5. In addition to Hurts' offensive production, the Crimson Tide (3-0) scored 14 points off two Rams' (2-2) turnovers.
"She had superficial injuries that we could see, she was covered in grease and muck from under the auto".
After the rescue, Kelly was rushed to the nearby vet where it was discovered she once had a joey.
But sadly that's when it became clear Kelli was missing a joey.
'Upon arrival I was aware of the smell of burnt fur which added to the trauma of the situation'. I didn't find anything, ' Ms Brister said. "But apart from that she was okay, she was just in shock".
After recuperating from her travels, the animal was released back into wild.
