North Korea's Foreign Minister left for NY on Tuesday to attend the UN General Assembly session at a time of heightened tension on the Korean Peninsula over Pyongyang's repeated weapons tests and increase in sanctions against the Kim Jong-un regime. "We are pleased to see that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, ... unilaterally stated that it is important to abide by the principle of sovereignty in the global affairs, that it is more important to lead by an example than dictate to other peoples", the minister said. And in his address to the UN, Trump drew dismayed laughter and later, criticism for his declaration that if North Korea threatens the USA, he will "totally destroy" it.
Russia's foreign minister said on Friday the leaders of North Korea and the United States should tone down their bellicose rhetoric and warned that a collapse of a nuclear deal between Iran and world powers would only embolden Pyongyang.
However, following the North's recent repeated provocations, the South Korean president has said dialogue may not be possible, at least for now.
In the weeks leading up to the UN General Assembly, Trump threatened to bring "fire and fury" down upon North Korea if it threatened the United States or its allies.
"Military hysteria is not just an impasse, it's a disaster", Lavrov chastised, adding that Russian Federation "resolutely condemned the missile adventures of Pyongyang in violation of Security Council resolutions".
USA bombers, fighters, stage show of force off North Korean coast
In a lengthy statement carried by state media, Kim said Trump would "pay dearly" for his recent threat to destroy North Korea. Trump said the United States would "totally destroy" North Korea if it threatened the United States or its allies.
China hopes that Japan will talk and act cautiously and also play a constructive role on the nuclear issue, he said.
Russian Federation also condemned unilateral USA sanctions on Iran, saying the move would undermine a collective response to Tehran.
"But I am confident today that if something happened, [US Northern Command head, Air Force Gen Lori Robinson] has the ability with the fielded forces we have to defend against ballistic missile attack by North Korea".
He then urged the worldwide community to make additional efforts aimed at restoring stability in Syria and Iraq, adding that what has been done so far is still not enough, despite the success achieved in fighting Islamic State (IS, former ISIS/ISIL) in the region.
