Russia could be America's greatest ally against North Korea

The quake came at the end of a week that saw a blistering war of words between Kim and Trump, with the USA leader using his maiden speech at the UN General Assembly to warn that Washington would "totally destroy" the North if America or its allies were threatened.

It was the latest chapter in an ongoing game of nuclear chicken between the USA and North Korea, which continued earlier this week when Trump called dictator Kim Jong Un "Rocket Man" and told the United Nations that he would "totally destroy" the country if it continued to threaten the us or its allies.

Mr Trump called the North Korean leader a "madman" on Friday, a day after Kim dubbed him a "mentally deranged USA dotard".

North Korea was scheduled to speak at the UN General Assembly on Friday night, but dropped off of its planned roster spot. Yet in early September, after North Korea conducted its sixth and biggest nuclear test, it called the prospect of a full oil embargo "rash and extreme".

The United States has put together the strongest economic sanctions to ever be enacted against North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and diplomatic efforts are continuing "unabated", Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Friday.

The speech came shortly after the Pentagon announced that USA bombers flew a mission over worldwide waters near the east coast of North Korea that went farther north of the Demilitarized Zone than any US aircraft have this century. Since time immemorial, Chinese leaders have always been considered North Korea's diplomatic protectors but now express increasing frustration with the government of Kim Jong Un.

North Korea could choose not to use a missile for a test like this to mitigate some risk, but still demonstrate an awe-inspiring capability. "The brutal North Korea regime does not respect its own citizens, or the sovereignty of other nations".

Moon praised Trump's bellicose speech to the United Nations about the threat, saying the US had "responded in a very good way".

The statement did not name any specific weapons systems.

In an executive order issued Thursday, the Treasury Department has been granted expanded latitude to target anyone trading with North Korea, barring them from using the US banking system.

"Why not?" he said, when asked whether there could be talks with Pyongyang.

Abe said Japan, a treaty ally of the United States, consistently supported the USA stance that "all options are on the table" in dealing with North Korea.

"It is different from the truth that I know", Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said during a regular press briefing. As a response Japan has confirmed its initiative to fully cooperate with the United States and other relevant countries of the situation to respond to these acts of aggression. French Sports Minister Laura Flessel said France's team would not travel to the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in South Korea if its security could not be guaranteed.
