Prices for regular unleaded gas averaged $2.15 per gallon on Sunday, 4.5 cents more than a week ago, AAA said, and 10 cents more than past year.
That's about 3 cents higher than this time a year ago.
According to the Energy Information Administration's report for the week ending on July 7, gasoline demand did not hit an all-time high last week, but did reach a "top 5" milestone.
According to a survey by AAA Northeast, self-serve, regular unleaded gas is averaging $2.18 per gallon in MA, which is seven cents lower than the national average. Average prices decreased less than 1 cent in Caledonia, $2.36; Livonia, $2.38; and Geneseo, $2.39.
Austin- $2.01/g, down 1 cent per gallon from last week's $2.02/g.

Gas prices "have held relatively steady for the past two weeks, but now face upward pressure", according to a recent advisory from the AAA. SC tops the list for least expensive gasoline ($1.97), while Hawaii has the most expensive at $3.05. The lowest prices were seen in Tampa, where the average cost of a gallon of gas was running at $2.01.
"Gas prices could inch a little higher this week", said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA - The Auto Club Group.
Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, said as expected, the national average dropped but 20 states saw average prices move higher.
"Oil prices, after sagging to close the month of June, had started July by surging, only to let up shortly after".
DeHaan said a special meeting OPEC has scheduled for July 27 will be watched for any policy or production changes.
