Lawmakers investigating allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election have raised questions about whether Mr Comey's 9 May firing was an attempt by Mr Trump to stop the Russia probe.
Comey admitted earlier this month, in sworn testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, that he had leaked a memorandum of a conversation with President Donald Trump with the deliberate intention of prompting the appointment of a special counsel to investigate Russia's interference with the 2016 election.
"But when he found out that there may be tapes out there, whether it be governmental tapes or anything else, I think his story may have changed.my story didn't change, my story was never a fake story".
However, prior to Comey leaking the memorandum to the Times, the newspaper had published accounts of Comey's descriptions of his meetings with Trump.
In excerpts from a separate interview, Trump criticized President Barack Obama for inaction in the face of Russian meddling.

This shuts out the Medicaid option for over 2.5 million people in states that didn't expand eligibility. The cap might apply on a per-person basis, or states might opt to take their money as a block grant.
No tapes were ever uncovered, but Comey later revealed during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing that he orchestrated the release of a memo that detailed conversations between him and the president.
"Robert Mueller is an honorable man and hopefully he'll come up with an honorable conclusion", Trump said, though he noted that Mueller and Comey were "very, very good friends" and also criticized the makeup of Mueller's growing team of attorneys involved in the investigation.
Trump wrote on Twitter on Thursday, a day before the deadline, that he did not know if there were recordings of his conversations with Comey, but he did not make or have any such recordings.
Trump did not provide a direct answer when asked if Mueller should recuse himself from the investigation because of his friendship with Comey, instead calling the special prosecutor's connection to the former FBI director "bothersome". "I mean the whole thing is ridiculous, if you want to know the truth".
