The president, for his part, has denied any collusion between members of his campaign and Russian agents looking to interfere with the election.
Shortly thereafter, he followed that up with another tweet, in which he returned to one of his main themes regarding the ongoing probe: "You are witnessing the single greatest witch hunt in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people".
Reports in United States media said senior intelligence officials would be interviewed on whether Mr Trump tried to end an inquiry into his sacked National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, and about the firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey.
The letter said the investigation would also probe Comey's testimony that Loretta Lynch, attorney general under former USA president Barack Obama, had directed him to describe an FBI probe into former U.S. secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton's e-mail practices as merely a "matter" and to avoid calling it an investigation.
Both the House and the Senate also have open investigations into Russian interference in last year's election. President seems to have acknowledged this as fact today in a tweet.

Special counsel Robert Mueller has brought 13 lawyers on board to handle the Russian Federation investigation, with plans to hire more, according to his spokesman Peter Carr. Trump tweets. Echoing tweets from Thursday, he concludes by adding: "Witch Hunt".
Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Trump's personal lawyer, had responded Wednesday evening to the Post report by saying: "The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal".
Trump has denied any collusion between himself or any of his associates and Russian Federation, and Putin has denied that Moscow sought to interfere in the election.
