Sri Lanka President attends India organised Yoga Day

Ever since the declaration of June 21 as the International Yoga Day by the United Nations, Indian missions have played a major role in celebrating yoga day across the globe with much fanfare. He said chief minister was opposing International Yoga Day celebration when internationally acclaimed Bihar School of Yoga was engaged in making Yoga more popular across the world.

China also backed India's move in the United Nations to make June 21 as International Yoga Day, giving a fillip to hundreds of yoga clubs and organisations.

The mass yoga practice is part of the series of activities to mark the 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and India and 10 years of their strategic partnership. Singapore's Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam also joined the yoga event this morning at his constituency of Nee Soon, said the Indian High Commission.

The events were held across the country with the support of local volunteer groups.

AYUSH Ministry is working day and night to make the International Yoga Day a big success not only at national level, but also at international level. The yoga ambassadors will enable a direct connect with the younger population in China attracted to yoga, the embassy said in a statement.

The function was jointly organised by Consulate General of India, Shanghai along with Wenzhou Municipal People s Government. Eighty-five yoga sessions were held this morning at 70 centres across Singapore, with some 8,000 participants.

A delegation of Uttar Pradesh government officials who had participated in the India China (Wenzhou) Leather Dialogue Forum on June 17 also attended the celebrations.

A special demonstration of yoga has also been held at the Opening Ceremony of BRICS Sports Meet in Guangzhou.

Officials said that as compared to the past year, participation has doubled with youngsters showing more enthusiasm.

Celebrations are already planned across China in places such as the Great Wall, Chengdu, India-China College, Dongguan, Zhongshan and Foshan cities.
