Scalise upgraded from 'critical' to 'serious' condition

Scalise has more surgery as authorities track shooter's path

The Latest: Doctor says Scalise recovery a good possibility

Yesterday morning, police say, Hodgkinson fired dozens of bullets at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Va., wounding five, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La.

The business of the House is resuming a day after a rifle-wielding attacker opened fire on Republican lawmakers practicing for a charity baseball game.

The cable news network was immediately inundated with Twitter users enraged that the "news" network whitewashed history by removing the fact that the image depicted both the Democrat and the Republican teams kneeling in prayer.

Before James Hodgkinson left his home in Belleville, Ill., in March, he sold almost everything he owned from his businesses. Authorities also were going over a cellphone, computer and camera taken from Hodgkinson's white van, which was parked near the ballfield.

Investigators say he shot House Rep. Steve Scalise before he was killed by police who had been guarding the congressman.

The annual Congressional Baseball Game pits Republicans against Democrats, but this year the focus has turned to showing unity in the wake of the shooting. He remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours. The FBI continues to process evidence in an effort to assess the potential motivations of the shooter, the agency said in a statement Friday. The congressman underwent another surgery Saturday, and the hospital said he was more responsive and speaking with family. "He will require additional surgeries to manage abdominal injuries and other bone injuries".

The man who shot Scalise and others at the baseball practice had with him a piece of paper with doodles and the names of three lawmakers, according to a person familiar with the case. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation and did so only on condition of anonymity.

The note was not considered an assassination list, the network said.

And in "96, when Jordan was retired, the Rockets joined Charles Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler all on the same team". The "super team" lost the championship a year ago against the Cavaliers when Kevin Durant was not yet in the roster.

Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center says "an excellent recovery is a good possibility", but says Scalise faces additional surgeries, a long hospital stay and rehabilitation.

Scalise, 51, sustained injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in his left hip on Wednesday morning on a baseball field in a Washington suburb.

Richmond said he assumes he will be Thursday night's starting pitcher for the Democrats, and the former college baseball player is likely to make Democrats the favorite tonight. A lobbyist, a congressional aide, and two Capitol Police officers were also injured in the shooting.

Scalise probably has hundreds of bullet fragments in his body, and doctors don't plan to remove them because usually there is more risk than benefit in doing so, Sava said. "I think that his risk of death right now is substantially lower than when he came in. he was as critical as you can be when he came in".

"We had nothing but baseball bats to fight back against a rifle with", Representative Mo Brooks told CNN.

Scalise's office released a statement from his wife, Jennifer, thanking people for their support and praising the two Capitol Police officers, Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who were injured while bringing down the gunman.

Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.
