Scalise undergoes more surgery after Virginia shooting

According to the New Orleans Advocate, sources close to the family said medical staff removed a tube inserted into Scalise's abdomen to prevent fluid from going into his lungs.

He underwent another surgery on Saturday at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, the statement adds, and his condition has been upgraded from critical to serious.

Congressman Steve Scalise has undergone another surgery as he recovered from Wednesday's shooting in Alexandria, Virginia.

Dr Jack Sava described how a bullet from an assault rifle entered Mr Scalise's hip and went through his pelvis, shattering blood vessels, bones and internal organs.

In a statement Saturday, Matt Mika's family says he will remain in the intensive care unit at George Washington University Hospital at least through the weekend.

Since then, the lawmaker has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures to stop the bleeding and fix bone.

But soon after the abrupt termination, Trump told NBC News that he had been going to fire Comey regardless of any recommendations. President Donald Trump says the economy is improving and job numbers are up, despite the "phony Witch Hunt " against him.

Four men, including Scalise, a police officer, a congressional aide and a lobbyist, were shot and wounded when a man identified as James Hodgkinson, opened fire on the lawmakers as they practiced for an annual charity baseball game between Republicans and Democrats.

Hodgkinson, from IL, who had lashed out against USA president Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media, was killed by Mr Scalise's security detail and other police officers.

The surgeon said there were hundreds of bullet fragments in Mr Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".

Although Scalise was able to talk while lying injured on the ball field, he had gone into shock by the time he was transported by helicopter to the hospital and arrived "in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", Sava said. "After he leaves the hospital he will require a period of healing and of rehabilitation".

The doctor said U.S. Capitol Police Special Agent Crystal Griner, who was also wounded in the shooting, "sustained a gunshot wound to the ankle, and remains hospitalized in good condition".

Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.
